You will not believe it until you saw it yourself. Unaffordable? No!

You do not have thousands on your bank account, but you want to heave yourself in terrific crystal blue water?

One way to do so:

  • do not book a package tour

You should travel individually. Not only a huge amount of money you will save, you´ll also be able to experience so much more and decide where and when to stay, too.

How to get to Maledives on low fares:
(arrival airport „Malé“)

  • flights from Colomobo (Sri Lanka) are really cheap and take only a bit over an hour; cost: from 110€-190€
  • flights from Thiruvananthapuram (India) or Chennai (India) are as cheap as from Sri Lanka
  • from Bangkok you will pay around 250-300€
  • flights from Germany and back are usually from 430 – 600€

To check out further flight plans, I always suggest to use www.skyscanner.com as they give you the chance to spot periods of low fares.

Where to stay on Maledives?

Well, as you probably noticed before, there are hundreds of islands on which you can enjoy your stay. It totally depends on your budget which destination you pick.

Low budget and high flexibility offer local islands such as Maafushi.

We decided to avoid touristic excessively expensive islands and chose Maafushi.

With Korean Air we headed towards Malé. What you should definately do: Try to be early at the airport and ask for a seat at the window. Believe me: It´s going to be one of the best views in your live – especially if you can´t afford the private water-taxi.

Arriving at Hulhumale („the airport-island“ just by Malé), we picked up our suitcases and headed outside. The personnel at the airport speak English very well, so no worries. Anyway, you can´t miss the „counter“ of the ferry to Malé, which is leaving every ten minutes. It´s 1$ per person and we have been surprised of all the blue water right by the airport already…..wonderful.

Our trip to Maafushi took about 2 hours. For some of us, it wasn´t as pleasurous as it was for us.

As one arrives at Maafushi, there is no chance to miss one´s „hotel“. Not only because theisland is tiny, but also because the representatives of your hotel use to wait for arrivals very other hour at the „harbour“. :-)

And since it´s such a looong way to walk to your accomodation (100 – 400m haha), you can drop off your suitcases at the „wheel barrow“, which the representatives always take with them.

After we checked in, we took our camera and explored the area around our hotel, which was Arena Beach Hotel.
We definately picked the best located hotel, since the only private beach of Maafushi was ours.

I love it already!

Gestern war unser vorletzter Tag  auf den Malediven. So haben wir eine schöne Schnorcheltour an 3 Riffen gemacht. Da wir nur zu 5. waren, konnte man von purem Spaß reden! Wir haben auch 20er Gruppen gesehen. Echt nicht zu genießen und schon gar nicht zu empfehlen  solch „Gruppenreisen“ über 10 Personen. Das erste Riff hieß Bananenriff. Riesig war´s und die Strömungen waren recht stark. Wenn man ängstlich ist sollte man hier vorsichtig sein, oder eine Schwimmweste tragen. Beeindruckend war, dass man an der Riffkante ca. 25m hinunterschauen konnte ..in´s tiefe weite Blau. Das 2. Riff war nahe einer Insel, flacher, kunterbunt und leider hatte sich der Octopus versteckt….hätte ein tolles Bild abgegeben. Die 3. Stelle war echt klasse. Der Guide meinte, dass wir hier nach Manta und Rochen suchen. Und ich dachte „Jaja als ob wir hier irgendwas sehen würden…“

Und schon nach 5 Minuten sah ich die Rochen.

Auch eine Seegurke durften wir mal in den Händen halten. Fühlen sich total seltsam an die Dinger. Als wenn die innen hohl sind und nur aus Haut und Luft bestünden. Was wir später erfahren durften: Sie können sehr giftig sein, denn wenn sie sich bedroht fühlen, sondern sie Gift ab.

…auf Filhalhohi wird ein Traum wahr

Was gibt es bisher zu sagen?
Wir sind heute auf eine Resortinsel „Filhalhohi“ gefahren und haben den Tag in vollen Zügen genossen. Kraniche, Meeresschildkröten, Rochen direkt am Ufer….


Es ist nicht in Worte zu fassen. Ja das Wasser ist wie im Prospekt. Die Unterwasserwelt ist bunt und reich an aufregenden Tieren…z.B. an Meeresschildkröten. Das war ein unglaublicher Moment, als sie langsam an der Riffkante entlang in unsere Richtung schwamm.

Ja hier begegnet man nicht weit vom Strand Rochen- und ich spreche hier von 4m Größe. Wir haben in den letzten 10 Tagen mehr erlebt und gesehen, als manch andere es im ganzen Leben erleben dürfen. Und wir sind so dankbar dafür.

Im Vergleich zu Sri Lanka,  ist die -ehrliche- Gastfreundschaft jedoch sehr selten auf den Malediven. Es ist an sich alles gut, aber man merkt, dass die Malediven eben eher touristisch sind. Als wir am 13. April um 2 Uhr aufgestanden sind, hatten uns die Einheimichen im Rockwell Hotel (Colombo) sogar 2.30 Uhr(!!!) zum Frühstück bekocht. Eier, Toast, frische Früchte,  frisch gepresster Saft, Würstchen etc. Wir müssen ehrlich zugeben: das war der beste Service, den wir hatten und zudem extrem persönlich. Da kann man evtl. sogar verzeihen, dass ein Bier a la 0.25L mit 400 LKR (2,21€) berechnet wurde… hahaha. Für deutsche Verhältnisse ist das ja sowieso okay.  aber in Sri Lanka kostet diese Sorte im Laden nicht einmal mal 1€ (0,33L).

Anflug Malediven…Tag 9

Auuuufstehen!  Um 6 geht unser Flug auf die Malediven und wir haben noch 45 Min Fahrt vor uns. Und Abgesehen davon, haben uns die Jungs vom Rockwell Hotel angeboten, Frühstück zu machen. Um 2 Uhr morgens?

Wie auch schon am Abend zuvor, hatten wir eine phänomenale Gastfreundschaft erlebt und wurden nicht nur am Abend mit verschiedenen Gerichten bekocht, sondern zum Frühstück gab es frisch gepressten Saft, Früchte, Brot, Rührei, Aufschnitte……wahnsinn.

Unser Zimmer war übrigens nicht nur sehr schön, sondern auch sehr günstig (48€ die Nacht für eine Suite) und sehr nah in der City.

und 5:30 geht ein in Erfüllung: Wir sitzen tatsächlich im Flieger auf dem Weg ins Paradies und das auch noch mit Fenstersitzplatz!!! Yippieeeeeeeee

Es sieht tatsächlich so aus…es ist wirklich wahr. Diese 45 Minuten Flug waren für uns einfach unbeschreiblich, denn wir wussten: Wenn wir landen, ist es endlich Realität.
